The Challenge

For Hadik, production required believable period-accurate reconstructions of 18th-century Berlin and sprawling historical battlefields. The main constraint was taking partial green-screen sets built on open fields and extending them into complete period architecture, fortified city gates, and dense mountain passes. Every wide shot needed massive soldier crowds and heavy environmental elements like cannon smoke and fire without revealing where practical set builds ended and digital environments began.

Our Approach

Hadik represents a major milestone for Spectral, marking our first feature film where we handled the complete visual effects pipeline from initial concept design through to final delivery. Our team took full ownership of the process, managing all on-set services, 3D scanning, reference capture, data wrangling, and the entirety of VFX post-production.

A core challenge was digitally recreating the authentic 18th-century architecture of Vienna and Berlin. To ground these environments in reality, our design team utilized plates shot on location at the Fortress of Monostor in Komárom, Hungary. We seamlessly blended practical sets—such as the physical build for the gates of Berlin—with extensive CG environment builds, ensuring the digital extensions aligned perfectly with the practical construction.

The project also required massive battle sequences filmed on location in the countryside near Budapest. To build out these sequences, our on-set team deployed a combination of LiDAR and aerial drone photogrammetry to scan vast battlefields and military camps. In post-production, we generated full environment extensions for both the Hungarian and Prussian encampments, ultimately enhancing the practical plate photography with thousands of digital soldiers and period-accurate assets
